Belonging to the Universe:  A Spirituality for the 21st Century

What comes to mind when you think about spirituality? Faith? Religion?  Most of us start our thought process with concepts we have about God or we think about ourselves and then ponder the ties that bind us to our God. And from there our thoughts flow to include our understandings about the meaning of life and our various beliefs.

At The Well, when we think about spirituality, faith, and religion we begin by taking a giant step back billions of years and reflect on the existence of the universe to which we belong - a universe created in, with and through, the loving energy of God. We think about the universe as an energy center and a center of creativity. (We think about the energy and creativity of galaxies, stars, planets, oceans, cells, molecules, atoms, and sub-atomic particles. And then we move through time to this moment, to our beautiful Earth, and to the life-form that is us.)  This starting point creates a large and unifying framework for our understanding of God, our faith and ourselves.  

It anchors us in the beginnings of all creation, roots us in the creative and loving energy of our God, and makes us aware of our ties to all of creation.

The Universe story is a story that shifts our thoughts from a distant, external God to a God closer to us than our own heart-beat; an embodied God who is the source and fulfillment of the entire universe.  It's a story of belonging to this God. And it's a story that encompasses all other peoples and religions. This Universe story is the core spirituality of our Well programs.

The Well is a creative energy center where the focus is on the three great relationships: the Divine-human, the human-human, and the Earth-human.  We offer programs in all three of these, not separating them but seeing them as constituting one sacred relationship.
