A retreat in the Holy Land

Remembering Women in the Bible

January 7 - 17, 2010

  • Wander the wilderness where Miriam challenged the leadership of Moses, and where Sarah and Hagar struggled over the fates of their children.
  • Walk the roadways of Galilee as Mary of Magdala once did in search of healing and wholeness.
  • Follow the ancient pilgrim path through Bethany, the home of Mary and Martha

This pilgrimage retreat experience is for women who wish to reflect on the Scriptures in the land that inspired them.  Rooted in Catholic Biblical scholarship, this retreat offers input on the texts and sites visited, experiences of common prayer, and times of quiet reflection. Travel days will begin early and include biblical sites that portray the story of women in the Old and New Testaments.  At each site, you will hear about the significance of the biblical story and have an opportunity to pray. The trip requires daily hikes, so participants must be able to walk a mile and be in good health.

~Where your journey will take you~

  • Galilee where you will stay by the lake for four nights. While there, you will visit important places in Jesus' ministry: Capernaum, Nazareth, Mt. Tabor, and the region of Caesarea Philippi.
  • From Galilee, you will travel south toward Jerusalem.  En route you will see the Negev desert and visit the ancient ruins of Beersheva where Abraham and Sarah sat by the well; and walk in the Wilderness of Zin where Miriam died.
  • In Jerusalem, you will see the Mount of Olives where Jesus looked over the holy city, the Holy Sepulchre; the Western Wall; and you will experience the sights, smells and sounds of the walled Old City that remains almost as it was in the time of Jesus.
  • Your final day will be spent in Ein Karem, the place of the Visitation, and in Bethlehem.
